The Chiltern Sculpture Trail was founded in 1990 with the intention of showing works not normally associated with an outdoor environment. With that aim, artists from a range of disciplines were commissioned to create new works which would spark debate or inquiry from the visitor. Using a broad range of materials, the artists combined periods of working on site with studio time. The resulting sculptures challenge preconceived thinking about what 'art in the landscape' should be.

As part of an ongoing collaboration with the Forestry Commission, new sculptures are added to the Trail whilst others are removed or resited, creating an exciting and changing collection. The Chiltern Sculpture Trail supports both temporary and permanent works and encourages innovative ideas. The emphasis is on man-made and urban materials, with each work conceived in direct response to a particular location in the wood, which has resulted in diverse sculptures to delight even the most seasoned visitor. You can begin a virtual tour of the collection or see thumbnail pictures of the works via the sculptures page.
