NO LONGER IN SITU. This artwork was produced by Oxfordshire based sculptor Colin Tilley,
in association with Oxfordshire County Council's Rethink Rubbish in my Community
competition. It was aimed at raising public awareness about the resources we waste,
the possibilities for the use of recycled materials, and especially the
very visual problem of domestic and commercial fly-tipping. This commission was part of
a series of projects which aimed to make Oxfordshire the country's cleanest county.
Fly-tipping is a real issue at the Trail when scrap cars and vans are periodically dumped
in the car park. Like many of the artworks in these woods, there was more to this work than
meet the eye. It invited the viewer to ask questions about the nature of our relationship
with our modern landscape. We may not like to see rubbish dumped in our towns and countryside,
we may think it is a good idea to live more sustainably, but are we prepared to do something
about it? It's an issue that affects us all. What A Waste presented us with the harsh
reality of our waste products, but on closer inspection also invited us in to suggest ways
in which we can re-think our rubbish.
