past works

Since its foundation in 1990 the Chiltern Sculpture Trail has been home to many artworks. Some are commissioned by the Trust as permanent installations, while others are designed as temporary additions. Below are some pieces which featured on the Trail but are no longer in situ. Other works which have been removed from Cowleaze Wood can be accessed by clicking the darker orange icons to the left or at the bottom of this page, or via links on the map page.

NO LONGER IN SITU.

Disused Car by Thomas Eisl (who also created an untitled work with car wing mirrors for the Trail) utilised the body shell of a popular Ford car which was pierced by tree branches.

Untitled by Katy Howkins. The process of making is integral to Katy's work - ritual, routine and habit are also important elements. In spring 2003 Katy created and installed an oversized latex doily onto the forest floor, the piece looking like a spotlight on the ground, a mysterious pool or some type of spillage. NO LONGER IN SITU.

Chiltern Ring by Danny Lane was a 7.5m diameter sculpture made from steel. It appeared beside a now little-used path from the car park towards the centre of the wood from 1992 until 1995.

NO LONGER IN SITU.

Amnesia by Gillian Cooper was made with a thousand cotton handkerchiefs, stiffened with royal icing and coloured with food dyes. They were hung from the twigs and branches of trees to form a trail of lilac through the wood. It appeared in June 1999 and was intended to be a temporary sculpture, slowly disintegrating through the summer and autumn months.

NO LONGER IN SITU.

Untitled by Mike Nelson was a controversial temporary work which even drew attention from the police! Located towards the centre of the wood, in the clearing previously used for Robert Jakes' Table, the 'ute' received a police aware notice the very day after it was put in position. It also featured in several newspaper reports about the development of the Trail.
